LETTER FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT

Cardinals,

The weather has begun to change and that brings about a need to provide some very important information to our Cardinal community.  While snow days may provide excitement to our kids, they can also cause stress for parents.  We want to reduce the stress by telling you what to expect from the Newton Community School District this winter.

Our district encompasses a large number of staff, substitutes, parents, students (PreK - 12), and community partners who are affected by a school cancellation, delay, or early release due to a weather emergency, or road conditions.  OuInclement Weather Notification Plan details the variety of media sources we will use to communicate any decisions, as early as 6:00 AM.  We encourage our parents and guardians to discuss contingency plans with their children for any inclement weather event that may arise.

Our district boundaries cover 195 square miles and our buses travel on both paved and gravel roadways.  When snow, ice, and mud make routes in these areas impassable, parents must follow our Emergency Hard Surface Routes plan.  Those families affected should have already received communication from our Transportation Department, but if you have additional questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Dave Kretz (Supervisor) or Lorna Marter (Assistant) at 641.792.4493.  When applicable, Inclement Weather Notifications will include information on Hard Surface Routes, as well as morning and afternoon Preschool.

If you are wondering about the status of Activities and Athletics during inclement weather, notifications are shared on social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter), through team messages from coaches, local media (KCOB & Newton Daily News), and on the Activities/Athletics (LHC) Calendar from our district website (www.newtoncsd.org).  Parents have the option to sign up for Notify Me! Alerts where they can receive automatic text and email notifications for schedule changes and reminders for those activities you want to track.  If you have any questions regarding Activities and Athletics, please contact Steph Langstraat (Berg Middle School) (langstraats@newtoncsd.org) or Ryan Rump (Newton High School) (rumpr@newtoncsd.org).

If you have questions regarding your Infinite Campus Parent Portal Account, and setting your emergency contact preferences (phone, text, email) for Infinite Campus Messenger, please contact your building secretary.

The safety of our students, staff, and families will always be the highest priority.  If you have any questions, please contact the district office at 641.792.5809 (Option 0).
