Newton By The Numbers
The Newton Community School District empowers every learner to achieve a lifetime of personal success.
We are a collaborative and cohesive team that inspires and supports all learners in a culture of safety and acceptance.
We are excited to provide a website that showcases our exceptional schools and some of the great things about living and working in Newton.
Our schools provide great educational opportunities for our students ranging from high rigor academic courses to outstanding extracurricular activities. The Newton Schools boast a great mix of opportunities from fine arts to athletics. We encourage and support students who participate in multiple activities. If you watch our video, our HS principal talks about this specifically.
Our four elementary schools are organized in a neighborhood configuration and contain kindergarten through 4th grade. Our goals are to have about 275 students on each campus and keep our class sizes in the 18-20 range. Our school and class size initiatives enhance our focus on "Capturing Kids' Hearts" which is a district initiative following Flip Flippen's core belief: "If you have a child's heart, you have their mind." Emerson Hough Elementary is a CKH National Showcase School Nominee and is under consideration to receive the designation as a National Showcase school for their exceptional implementation of Capturing Kids' Hearts.
We are also less than 1-year away from occupying our brand new $27 million middle school. This project began as a vision in the fall of 2015. After a year of preparation, our community overwhelmingly supported our bond and the plans began to build our 1000 student capacity middle school. The construction broke ground in June of 2017 and will be completed in the winter of 2018. The building is being constructed with 2 learning "pods" at each grade level and classrooms will include interactive technology to support our district's 1-on-1 initiative for all 4th - 12th grade students.
Newton High School continues its strong reputation and has been recognized as a Bronze Medal high school by U.S. News and World Report. The high school student ACT scores continue to eclipse the state's average and in 2016 the high school achieved Commended recognition on the Iowa Report Card. To quote the high school principal, "There's just no better place to raise your kid than Newton, Iowa." Come check us out. You will be glad you did.
