Red Pride Review- October 1st, 2021

   The Newton Community School District is wrapping up its sixth full week of school. That means parent-teacher conferences are upon us and it is time to remind everyone to be actively engaged in the educational process of your students. 

   Being an engaged parent means communicating with the teachers and school staff. Parent teacher conferences are one opportunity to check on the progress of your children and young adults. The dates of the conferences vary from one building to the next so make sure you check the school calendar to find out when you should visit your student’s school to visit with the teachers and administrators. Schools are always excited to get the opportunity to show off the many wonderful things our young Cardinals are doing.

   The other important thing you can do as a parent to be engaged is talk with your students about their school day. Asking the question “how was your day?” will probably get the response of “fine” or “okay.” But if you ask more specific questions you will be able to learn more about what they did during their school day. Consider asking things like: 

• What was the best part of your day? 
• What was the hardest thing you did today at school? 
• What did you learn today?  Can you show me something you learned today? 
• What do you know today that you didn’t know yesterday? 
• What was something exciting that happened today at school? 

These are just a few examples of some questions you could ask to get more information about the school day. Let your students know school is important to you. Get them used to talking about it. And most importantly, be actively engaged in their education to support them.
