A NOTE FROM TOM MESSINGER
Cardinals,
The Newton Community School District would like to extend a big thank you to all of our Cardinal Families for making the first semester successful in unprecedented times. As we start the spring semester of the 2020-2021 school year we are seeing close to 90% of our students in person five days per week. We are very proud of the fact we have implemented a “Return to Learn” plan which did not witness alarge number of absences due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In fact, our average daily attendance for students was close to one percent higher than last year at this point. Our mitigation efforts and our practices appear to have been successful -and your support played an enormous role.
We will continue to follow our plan and utilize our strategies to look out for the safety of our students and staff.Through the wearing of masks, social distancing when possible, and mitigation efforts the Newton Community School District will work to finish strong in our 2020-2021 school year and prepare for a new start next fall.
Last time I reported vaccination phase 1B would begin shortly and educators would be eligible to receive vaccinations. This has been delayed. The State of Iowa has received far fewer vaccinations than anticipated and must place the process on pause until more doses are available. This does not change our course of action with educating our students. We have a plan and we will continue to follow and monitor it.
If you have any questions about our Return to Learn Plan or our updated calendarplease contact me at 641.792.5809 (Option 5) or messingert@newtoncsd.org.I will be happy to speak with you and answer your questions.Again, we are excited to have our students back and eager to see them five days a week.
Yours truly,
Tom Messinger, Superintendent
Newton Community School District
