Last Day of the Semester Draws Near!

Happy Holidays from the Newton Community School District! If you are like us, you are wondering where 2019 went! With the winter break upon us, we wish you a restful and peaceful holiday. Congratulations to all of our students and staff for a successful fall. Your commitment and contributions to our Culture of Red Pride has not gone unnoticed. Newton is what it is because of who you are and what you add.

Thanks for being an integral part of our community and our school district.

What Goes into Weather Cancellation Decisions?

Have your ever wondered when a snowstorm rolls in overnight or the weatherman predicts a late afternoon blizzard, who makes the call to cancel school, to delay or close early? These decisions are made by a team of dedicated professionals who start in the early hours of the morning with the goal of keeping students, staff, and families safe as they travel to and from school. Check out the video to see how this process unfolds:

Supplemental Food Resources for Students at Newton

In the Newton Community School District, we recognize food insecurity may be a problem for some students. We would like to make you aware of resources we provide and resources available through the Food Bank of Iowa to help supplement students’ food needs.

The Backpack Buddy

The Backpack Buddy is supported at the Newton Community School District’s four neighborhood elementary schools. Students who are part of the program are provided two shelf-stable meals each Friday for the students to take home for the weekend. It is meant to supplement, not replace, their food needs for the weekend. These two meals will be provided on December 20, the last day of school before break.

Food Bank of Iowa

Food pantries locations in Newton where students and families can receive food assistance.

How to Keep your Kids engaged Over Winter Break

Winter break is a time for family and fun, but sometimes students struggle with the lack of routine and craziness of the holidays. Here are a few ideas to help keep your student engaged over break and make the return to school a little easier!

  1. Find a new book to enjoy, read together, or have your child read out loud to you.
  2. Take your child shopping with you. Shop local and
  3. Take a day trip and go to the Science Center, Art Center, or Botanical Gardens, and learn something new!
  4. Let your student choose a meal and cook together. Encourage them to measure out ingredients and read the recipes.
  5. Play a board game a day and encourage them to read the rules and lead the game.
  6. Make small things a challenge. Set a timer to pick up their rooms or make a list of things they must do before playing a game.
  7. Pick up a book from the library on something that interests your student, or something your student has asked questions about.
