PARENTS WITH STUDENTS ENTERING 7th-12th GRADE IN THE 2017 - 2018 SCHOOL YEAR:

The Iowa Department of Public Health has made changes to the Iowa Immunization Law for the start of the 2017 - 2018 school year.

On the first day of school in the 2017 - 2018 school year, EVERY student entering 7th-12th grade is required to have had the meningitis vaccination in order to enter the school building.

  • Those entering 7th-11th grade will need to have one dose of the meningitis vaccination
  • Those entering 12th grade who have received one dose of the meningitis vaccination (prior to the age of 16) will be required to have a booster, or second dose of the meningitis vaccination
  • If the 12th grade student has received the first dose of the meningitis vaccination after age 16, a booster is not required

In addition:  those entering 7th grade must also have proof of having the Tdap Booster (Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis/whooping cough) before school starts in August 2017, unless the student has a Certificate of Immunization Exemption.

Please submit an updated immunization record to Berg Middle School or Newton High School.  There will be no grace/extension period for the implementation of this requirement.  Students will not be allowed to start school if their immunizations are not up to date.
